07.01.2010 July, 2010 - The Extra Mile Education Foundation, in collaboration with the Diocese of Pittsburgh, has announced plans to reorganize the four Extra Mile school sites into two and expand the scholarship program that now helps nearly 120 students at two parochial schools.

Holy Rosary School in Homewood and St. James School in Wilkinsburg have merged to form Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic Academy, located at the site of the former St. James School, effective July 1, 2010. St. Agnes School in Oakland and St. Benedict the Moor in the Hill District will also be consolidated by the start of school year 2011-12, but details of that plan are still in development.

The consolidation of schools will allow for a number of improvements including the reduction and stabilization of tuition for parents, the expansion and improvement of the two physical plants, an improved educational program that continues to focus on core disciplines while allowing for enhanced curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Over the past twenty years, the Extra Mile Education Foundation has provided more than $30 million in operational and capital subsidies to these schools and their students. All of this has been made possible only with the generous support of a number of businesses, corporations, foundations and private donors. The success of the investment in these schools has been well documented, both in the educational excellence of the schools, as well as the support services provided for students and their families.

The annual Extra Mile Education Foundation golf outing on June 7th was a major success. One of the larger fields in the event's thirteen year history - 131 golfers - enjoyed a great day at the Club at Nevillewood. Honorary Chairman, Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin charged all in attendance to "have a good time!"

Thanks to great corporate sponsorships, including Highmark and H. J. Heinz Company, and a raffle and live auction conducted by Coach Tomlin, net proceeds should be close to $120,000.

Rachel Banks, a graduate of St. James School and now a Gates Millennium scholar who is currently a junior at the University of Notre Dame, told the golfers and friends over dinner that without St. James, she would not have received the direction and focus that have enabled her to succeed. Coach Tomlin said that Rachel is a perfect example of why Extra Mile works. "We must keep it going," he said. "The future of our children is at stake!"
